My Sewing Journey with Grandmother
Sewing has been a cornerstone of my life– a thread that weaves together my enthusiasms, memories, and ambitions, and my commitment to this activity culminates in the establishment of my Sewing Club at school.
More than just a hobby, this passion is inextricably connected with my family, and I can not elaborate on my sewing stories without mentioning my grandmother who opened my eyes to the art of sewing when I was eight.
I remembered the countless hours spent with her, her steadfast hands guiding me as I learned to navigate the sleek, black, and gold needle dancer as shown in the left picture– the Butterfly sewing machine that has witnessed the growth of my grandmother, my mom, and me.
However, these memories are bittersweet now. My grandmother no longer sews much with her memory fading and often calls me for help threading needles. But love and our shared passion for sewing can withstand the passage of time. I now find myself sitting side-by-side once a week, teaching her how to lead threads through the machine, reminding her of the techniques she had once imparted to me.
Though looking a bit well-worn, the sewing machine bears ever-lasting family ties, and the activity of sewing not only taught me sophisticated craftsmanship but also valuable life lessons that I carry forward in my Sewing Club:
- Patience is key - Just as my grandmother patiently taught me, I now understand the importance of patience in teaching others.
- Empathy and understanding - Recognizing the struggles of beginners and offering support, just as I support my grandmother now.
- The circle of learning - Knowledge is meant to be shared, whether teaching peers or helping those who once taught us.
- Preserving legacy - Through sewing, we can keep alive the memories and skills of those we love.
